What is Parkour?
Parkour is the physical discipline of moving through one's environment with efficiency and speed in order to get to one's goal quickly and safely.
What is Freerunning?
Freerunning is similar to Parkour in that the movements are shared, but freerunning does not use these movements to achieve a goal. Instead, Freerunners practice for fun and to express their movement as an artform.
What are people who practice Parkour called?
Traceur [tʁasœʁ] and traceuse [tʁasøz] are substantives derived from the French verb tracer, which normally means "to trace", or "to draw", but which is also a slang for "to go fast". It also comes from the idea of 'tracing the footsteps' of those who first walked the path of Parkour.
Are there competitions in Parkour?
Parkour is a non-competitive, physical discipline that only asks us to challenge ourselves. Freerunning does have competitions, such as the RedBull Art of Motion, where judges determine the winner based on style, difficulty of movement, and technique.
Why should I practice Parkour?
Parkour teaches and trains every part of the body (strength, speed, agility, stamina, and flexibility) while also training the mind in adaptation, overcoming fears, and learning how to set and achieve goals. Practicing Parkour keeps the body fit, and the mind aware.
Are there health risks in practicing Parkour?
In any physical activity there is a risk of injury or bodily harm. With proper conditioning and supervision, Parkour is no more dangerous than any other sport. We especially focus on present and future health, which means thinking of how our training today will affect us tomorrow.
Where can I practice Parkour?
Miami Parkour holds free training sessions that anyone can attend at Florida International University. If you cannot make it to FIU, MIAPK offers 2-hour personal instructor sessions.
What is 'flow'?
Flow is a term that describes a Traceur's ability to go from movement to movement without hesitation or interruption.
Is Parkour open to anyone?
The basics of Parkour can be practiced by anyone of good health that is willing to train diligently. Advanced Parkour skills will require many years of practice.
